Signs you need boiler servicing — and what to do next
A poorly performing boiler doesn’t always give an obvious warning. Small faults left unaddressed become costly breakdowns — especially in Glasgow’s cold months. Bradley at HRS Heating Solutions (Gas Safe registered, 10+ years’ experience) sees the same tell-tale signs every winter. Spot these early and act fast.
Common signs your boiler needs a service
- Cold radiators or uneven heating
- Radiators that are warm at the top but cold at the bottom usually point to sludge or trapped air. That’s a system issue, not just the thermostat.
- Strange noises — kettling, clanking or gurgling
- Kettling is usually limescale on the heat exchanger or restricted flow. Clanking and gurgling often mean trapped air or pump problems.
- Low or dropping system pressure
- If the boiler pressure keeps falling, there could be a leak or a faulty filling loop or expansion vessel.
- Frequent pilot light or ignition failures
- Modern boilers use electronic ignition. Repeated lockouts, flashing fault codes or repeated relighting attempts mean a service is needed.
- Yellow or sooty flame (on boilers with a visible flame)
- A healthy gas flame is blue. A yellow flame can indicate incomplete combustion — a safety issue that needs an engineer.
- Unexplained increase in gas bills
- Loss of efficiency from worn components or a dirty heat exchanger will show up as higher fuel use.
- Boiler trips or displays error codes
- Note the error code and when it happens (e.g. after heating comes on). That information helps a Gas Safe engineer diagnose the fault quickly.
- Foul smells, particularly of gas
- This is urgent. If you smell gas, follow the safety steps below immediately.
Quick checks you can do before calling an engineer
- Check the boiler pressure gauge — it should typically sit between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold (check your manual). If it’s low, top up via the filling loop if you’re confident doing so.
- Bleed radiators that have cold tops. Use a radiator key and catch the water in a cloth.
- Reset the boiler only once. If it locks out again, don’t keep resetting — note the error and call an engineer.
- Check the thermostat and programmer settings to rule out a simple control issue.
- If you smell gas, evacuate the property and call the national gas emergency number immediately: 0800 111 999.
These checks avoid unnecessary call-outs but don’t replace a thorough service by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What a professional boiler service covers
A proper service by a Gas Safe registered engineer (like Bradley at HRS) includes:
- Visual and safety checks of the flue and combustion performance
- Inspection and testing of safety controls, valves and seals
- Cleaning or replacing burner components as needed
- Checking the heat exchanger and combustion chamber for build-up
- Testing gas rate and pressure for safe operation
- Checking system pressure, expansion vessel and pumps
- Recording observed fault codes and recommending remedial work
A full service keeps the boiler safe, helps maintain manufacturer warranty conditions and improves efficiency — which reduces the risk of sudden breakdowns.
When to expect urgent attention
If you notice any of the following, treat it as urgent:
- Strong smell of gas
- Continuous yellow flame or heavy sooting
- Significant water leaks around the boiler or pipework
- Repeated lockouts with no successful restart
For gas smells, evacuate, turn off the gas supply at the meter if safe, and call 0800 111 999. For other urgent faults, call a Gas Safe engineer who can attend same-day where possible.
Factors that affect repair or servicing work
If a service identifies issues, the work required — and the time to fix it — depends on:
- Boiler age and model (older boilers often need more parts or replacement)
- Accessibility of the boiler and pipework (tight cupboards or lofts take longer)
- Whether the fault is with the boiler itself or the wider heating system (radiator sludge, pump failure, valves)
HRS Heating Solutions will explain the options clearly and provide a transparent quote for any remedial work.
Prevent this happening again
- Book annual servicing — this is the simplest way to catch wear before it becomes a failure
- Consider a system flush or powerflush if you’ve had persistent cold spots or sludge
- Fit a magnetic filter on systems prone to corrosion to reduce sludge
- Keep the boiler serviced to maintain efficiency and help keep warranty cover valid
